The rugged terrain of the Kumaon region is both beautiful and challenging. At PSP Memorial Super Speciality Hospital, we frequently see trauma patterns unique to our geographyβfrom steep falls to vehicular accidents on winding mountain roads. Time and specialized intervention are critical.
The "Golden Hour" in Mountain Rescue
In severe trauma, particularly involving head injuries or compound fractures, the "Golden Hour"βthe first 60 minutes following the accidentβis the most critical window for survival and minimizing long-term disability. However, mountain logistics often delay transport.
What to do while waiting for emergency services:
- Do Not Move the Patient Unnecessarily: Unless they are in immediate danger (e.g., fire, rockfall), keep the patient absolutely still to prevent exacerbating potential spinal injuries.
- Control Bleeding: Apply firm, direct pressure to any bleeding wounds using the cleanest cloth available.
- Keep Them Warm: High altitudes can quickly lead to hypothermia, especially if the patient is in shock. Insulate them from the cold ground.
π¨ 24/7 Trauma Response Team
PSP Hospital's Emergency Department in Dahariya is equipped with Level 1 trauma capabilities, including an always-ready blood bank, immediate CT scanning, and standby neurosurgical teams.
Haldwani Emergency Line: +91-5946-280000Neurosurgical and Orthopedic Integration
High-impact mountain accidents rarely result in isolated injuries. They are typically "poly-trauma" cases. This is why a multispeciality approach is vital. While our Orthopedic team works to stabilize complex, comminuted fractures using C-Arm guided interventions, our Neurosurgery team, led by Dr. Pan Singh Pimoli, concurrently assesses and manages traumatic brain injuries (TBI) and spinal cord compressions.
Rehabilitation and Recovery
Surviving the trauma is only the first step. Our integrated physiotherapy and rehabilitation department works with patients from day one in the ICU, ensuring that muscle wasting is minimized and mobility is restored as quickly and safely as possible.
